Nike+ Run Club

As part of a decade-long partnership with Nike, R/GA has been building out the Nike+ ecosystem, helping create the world’s largest running community. Fueled by a burgeoning relationship with Apple, Nike wanted to expand the community from tens of millions to hundreds of millions—including people who hate running.

With simplicity in mind, we created a running experience for the new Apple Watch Series 2. Now anyone can run with Nike+—no phone required. Packed with features to help even the most reluctant runners get connected and inspired, the Apple Watch Nike+ offers a gentle daily reminder: “Are we running today?”

The R/GA team in Portland had been building the production app, where my R/GA Prototype Studio team in New York was asked to build the Apple Watch prototype app that looked just like the production app, but with a simplified flow and a fake GPS, so you don’t have to actually run to test the experience. My role as the main programmer was to put together the running feature, working closely with the visual designer and experience designer to define and validate the interface and haptic designs. I also localized it in 10 languages. Nike and Apple used the prototype for internal presentations as well as at retail stores.

Nike+ Running Club app for Apple Watch was built in Swift using WatchKit.
