Converse

Chuck Hack

Converse came to R/GA asking us to 'Hack a Chuck' — specifically asking us to combine design and technology. Prototype Studio had an internal submission of ideas, and my idea got chosen for me to proceed making.

The idea was to turn a pair of Chucks into something self-powered and functional, making the bicycle rider feel safe biking at night. I teamed up with Jarrett Jamison — a talented graphic designer and graffiti artist — to create a couple of sleek, streamlined Chucks that did just that.

Jarrett spray-painted the bicycle-themed designs directly on the black and white Chucks. I hand-sewn LED light bulbs and coin cell batteries with conductive thread along the design, powering the LEDs.

Once posted on Converse's official brand channel on Vine, this very basic hack got the most likes and shares without any help of PR.
